Active Release Technique (ART) Framework
Relieve pain, restore function
The Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, non-invasive treatment that aims to relieve pain and restore function by breaking up adhesions and restrictions in soft tissues. ART sessions typically last 5-15 minutes and cost between $45-100 each. Most client injuries are treated in one to six sessions.
- Identify and treat the root cause of pain, not just the symptoms
- Use a combination of compression, tension, and movement to break up adhesions
- Treat the entire kinetic chain, not just the affected area
- Initial ConsultationThe practitioner will assess the patient's condition and identify the areas to be treated.Pro tipBe sure to communicate clearly with the practitioner about your pain and areas of concern.WarningART may cause temporary discomfort or pain during treatment.
- Treatment SessionThe practitioner will apply compression, tension, and movement to the affected areas to break up adhesions.Pro tipRelax and breathe deeply during treatment to help the practitioner access the affected areas.WarningDo not try to treat yourself or use ART on others without proper training and certification.
Case Study: Timothy Ferriss
Timothy Ferriss, the author, used ART to treat his chronic back pain and experienced significant relief after just one session.
OutcomeReduced pain and improved range of motion
Insufficient Training
Using ART without proper training and certification can lead to ineffective treatment or injury.
Inadequate Communication
Failing to communicate clearly with the practitioner about pain and areas of concern can lead to incomplete or ineffective treatment.
ART was developed by Dr. Mike Leahy, who used it to treat athletes and eventually founded the Active Release Technique organization.
