The Four-Week Vacation Test
Prove your business runs without you by completely disconnecting for four consecutive weeks
The Four-Week Vacation is both the ultimate test and the ultimate goal of the Clockwork system. Most businesses go through a complete business cycle within four weeks, experiencing activity in all four ACDC stages (Attract, Convert, Deliver, Collect) plus encountering internal problems and external challenges. By removing yourself from the business for four consecutive weeks, with no email, no calls, and no checking in, you force the business to support itself through an entire cycle.
This is not a workcation where you check email by the pool. This is a complete disconnection. You change your email and social media passwords so only your designated person can access them. You leave explicit instructions that you are not to be contacted. The business must solve its own problems, make its own decisions, and deliver to customers without your involvement.
The test reveals every weakness, every undocumented system, every dependency on you that you did not know existed. When you return, you debrief with your team to identify what worked, what broke, and what needs improvement. Each subsequent four-week vacation gets smoother as you fix the gaps revealed by the previous one.

- Prepare the business for your absenceIn the months leading up to the vacation, systematically remove yourself from every process. Capture systems, declare and protect the QBR, balance your team, and create your dashboard. Designate a point person to handle decisions. Have your assistant change your passwords right before you leave so you literally cannot check in.
- Disconnect completely for four weeksLeave. No email, no calls, no Slack, no checking the dashboard. Bring a notepad for business ideas that come to you during downtime, but do not act on them. Make meaningful connections with loved ones. Take a memorable photo to frame in your office later. Trust the systems you built.
- Debrief and improveThe day after you return, hold a debrief meeting with your team. Evaluate what went as expected, what surprised them, what problems arose and how they were handled, and what gaps need to be fixed. Schedule weekly follow-up debriefs for the next four weeks. Fix the gaps and schedule your next four-week vacation for twelve months later.
