The Theme System

Stack life from broad theme down to the concrete decision in front of you.

Problem it solves

Themes alone are too fuzzy to act on day-to-day; you need a way to connect a broad direction down to the sharp, specific decision current-you is actually making.

Best for

People who like the theme idea but need structure to act on it day-to-day; seasonal planning and habit tracking.

Not ideal for

Anyone who wants a full-year, date-driven project plan with fixed milestones.

Overview

Why this framework exists

A four-level altitude model. At the top sits the broad, long-term THEME (direction). Below it are the SYSTEMS — the habits and routines you set up. Below those are the TARGETS those systems 'might or might not generate'. At the most concrete and sharp is the ACTION or decision current-you is taking right now. The broad guides the short. Operationalised as the Theme System Journal (Grey + Myke Hurley, produced by Studio Neat / Cortex Brand): a slim, single-season journal pairing a guiding theme with daily habit tracking and reflection.

Core principles

4 total
  1. Altitude separation: theme (broad / long) -> systems -> targets -> action (sharp / now).
  2. Build systems, not just goals — targets are an output a system 'might or might not generate', never the point.
  3. Match the horizon to a human length of time: a season, not necessarily a full year (fog-of-the-future).
  4. Track daily, reflect regularly: the journal pairs habit tracking with the guiding theme so the broad stays connected to the concrete.

Origin story

How this framework came to be

Sketched at the end of 'Your Theme' as 'a story for another time', then productised as the Theme System Journal, launched and detailed in Cortex episode #87 ('The Theme System Journal'). The journal is intentionally slim — designed to last a single season rather than a full year.
