The Theme System
Stack life from broad theme down to the concrete decision in front of you.
A four-level altitude model. At the top sits the broad, long-term THEME (direction). Below it are the SYSTEMS — the habits and routines you set up. Below those are the TARGETS those systems 'might or might not generate'. At the most concrete and sharp is the ACTION or decision current-you is taking right now. The broad guides the short. Operationalised as the Theme System Journal (Grey + Myke Hurley, produced by Studio Neat / Cortex Brand): a slim, single-season journal pairing a guiding theme with daily habit tracking and reflection.
- Altitude separation: theme (broad / long) -> systems -> targets -> action (sharp / now).
- Build systems, not just goals — targets are an output a system 'might or might not generate', never the point.
- Match the horizon to a human length of time: a season, not necessarily a full year (fog-of-the-future).
- Track daily, reflect regularly: the journal pairs habit tracking with the guiding theme so the broad stays connected to the concrete.
Sketched at the end of 'Your Theme' as 'a story for another time', then productised as the Theme System Journal, launched and detailed in Cortex episode #87 ('The Theme System Journal'). The journal is intentionally slim — designed to last a single season rather than a full year.
