C. West Churchman was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, affiliated with its business school and the Center for Research in Management. He authored foundational texts including 'The Systems Approach' (1968) and 'The Design of Inquiring Systems' (1971), arguing that knowledge-building organisations must be understood as purposeful, self-correcting wholes. He is credited with introducing Wicked Problems into academic discourse alongside Russell Ackoff.
