His research examines how firms compete in emerging markets where specialised intermediaries are absent, a concept he developed with Tarun Khanna as 'institutional voids'. Co-author of 'Winning in Emerging Markets', the framework is widely used to analyse diversified business-group dominance across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
