Michael Spence
signaling theory.
A. Michael Spence is a professor of economics, formerly dean of Stanford Graduate School of Business. He shared the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his analysis of markets with asymmetric information. His signature contribution is the signalling model, which demonstrates how costly but unproductive signals—such as educational credentials—can credibly convey private information to uninformed market participants.
