Metabolically Healthy Food Framework
3 Principles for Healthy Food
The Metabolically Healthy Food Framework is based on three principles: protect the liver, feed the gut, and support the brain. By adhering to these principles, food products can be created that are healthy and beneficial for consumers. The framework involves a thorough analysis of ingredients, procurement, and packaging to ensure that the final product meets the three principles.
- Protect the liver by reducing sugar and emulsifier content
- Feed the gut by adding fiber and Omega-3s
- Support the brain by ensuring the food product does not cause inflammation or oxidative stress
- Analyze IngredientsConduct a thorough analysis of the ingredients used in the food product to identify potential harmful components such as sugar, emulsifiers, and artificial sweeteners.Pro tipUse biochemical analysis to verify the composition of ingredientsWarningRelying on vendor claims may not be sufficient
- Re-engineer the ProductBased on the analysis, re-engineer the food product to meet the three principles by reducing or eliminating harmful ingredients and adding beneficial ones such as fiber and Omega-3s.Pro tipConsider the entire supply chain and manufacturing processWarningSimply replacing one harmful ingredient with another may not be sufficient
- Test and RefineTest the re-engineered product to ensure it meets the three principles and refine the formulation as needed.Pro tipUse human trials and feedback to refine the productWarningRelying solely on laboratory tests may not be sufficient
KDD, a food company in the Middle East, collaborated with Dr. Robert Lustig to develop a line of metabolically healthy products based on the three principles.
The framework was developed by Dr. Robert Lustig and his team in collaboration with the Kuwaiti Danish Dairy company (KDD) to create a roadmap for the food industry to produce metabolically healthy products. The project involved a scientific advisory team that analyzed KDD's entire product portfolio and re-engineered it to meet the three principles.
