GNOME / Xamarin: dual-license open-source-to-commercial
Co-founder of GNOME and Xamarin, Miguel de Icaza built open-source projects and then commercialised them through dual-licensing — free for open-source use, paid for proprietary development. He created Mono, an open-source .NET runtime, which became the technical foundation of Xamarin's cross-platform mobile SDK. Microsoft acquired Xamarin in 2016 and he subsequently joined Microsoft.
