Chester Barnard
Functions of the Executive, cooperative systems
Chester Barnard served as president of New Jersey Bell Telephone Company and later as president of the Rockefeller Foundation. His 1938 book The Functions of the Executive argued that organisations are cooperative systems requiring willing participant consent, not top-down command. He introduced the acceptance theory of authority and highlighted the critical role of informal organisations in sustaining formal ones.
