Kaoru Ishikawa
Fishbone diagram, quality circles
Japanese organisational theorist and professor at the University of Tokyo, Ishikawa was a central figure in post-war Japanese quality management. He developed the Ishikawa (fishbone) diagram to map root causes of defects and popularised quality circles — small employee-led groups solving workplace problems. His seven basic tools of quality became standard practice in manufacturing and process management worldwide.
