Philip Selznick
Institutional leadership, distinctive competence
Selznick was a professor of sociology and law at the University of California, Berkeley for most of his career. His book Leadership in Administration argued that organisations become 'institutions' when they acquire value beyond their technical function, and that leaders must define and defend that character. He also developed the concept of cooptation through his study of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
