original cognitive dissonance theory.
Festinger was a social psychologist who held posts at MIT, the University of Minnesota, Stanford, and the New School for Social Research. His 1957 book 'A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance' reshaped understanding of attitude change and self-justification. He also developed social comparison theory, arguing people evaluate their opinions and abilities by benchmarking against others.
